June V & F ambush
What do you do when you want
t to get rid of the 'new unit curse' on several units as well as catch up on a campaign event ?
Of course we decided to try the game as an opportunity to use a set of rules neither player's used. Talk about hubris! Yeah, real Greek tragedy pride
And so Greg and I met the 12th of June, lots of newly painted, at least not used before, unit. We set out to recreate Greg's S'Gottland retrograde movement to resupply after the Cossacks of Fuddland had interrupted the flow of oatmeal, onions and sheep intestines.
After setting the order of march down, the placing of units pointed out we lacked the structure of identified brigades, rather an important the Command and Control portion of the rules. We did allow our gaze to be linger on the new grass mats, the finally painted resin trees. How would Gregg react to attacks? How would the ambushing units move to take advantage of the situation?
As often happens, the column is spread along the road and vulnerable. I go to refer to the rules, noting that I haven't got a copy in the folder I labeled and had thought to use. Greg had mentioned during set up his copy was at present hiding out in his to be reviewed pile. Ooooops..
A column was moving through the defile created by a steep hill and a large forest
Honestly, neither of us were in a position of familiarity with the rules to adjust for what the scenario needed.
We decided to 'free kriegspeile' the encounter. This sounds very technical, yet means we tried to convince each other of the acumen of our little lead guys, reinforced by a roll off for 'important' decisions.
So all Greg's column needs ti sgo up thep road, keeping the artillery pieces and wagons in hand as well as keeping enough of the column alive as a fighting force. So a cavalry unit, a battery of 6 pounders, six battalions of infantry lined up on the road.
Small light cavalry patrol attempts to slow the colum
I had envisioned the ambush including fire from a skirmishing infantry unit on the hill, supported by an artillery battery. That force would be the anvil; other units would come from behind on the road and the off board open area to the left of the column
There followed a good-natured debate on what happened. Pretty much sealed the aftermath as the first wave of pursuers from Fuddland missed the rear of the column. The photos are from the free kriegspiele we used in lieu of the rules.
Small patrols attempt to make an opportunity
The attempted delays are unsuccessful.
The rear of the column attempts to tighten up.
The center watches for flank ambush.
We will try out the Valor and Fortune another time.
Proper orders of battle and orders to commmanders.
Til then.
