New kids in town, and a scenario not yet played
We had a delightful game of AD 1666 this week. I won, so that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Rodger brought out his newly painted Order of the Broken Cross, while Greg fielded his loyal King's Musketeers and I produced some Veterans of the Tercio Spanish contingent for a game "Kill the Blasphemer!" The gameplay featured a map board we had not used yet, Roger was fielding quite the new force for himself.
Set up, the board has not been used in other scenarios, the Blasphemer and two guards in the middle.
I did manage to take some photos; what follows is not blow-by-blow but you'll get the basic idea of how the game played out. The King's Musketeers enter from top left, the Order of the Broken Cross from the top right, and my brave (Spanish)Veterans of the Tercio from the bottom right.
According to the scenario rules, The Order of the Broken Cross has the mission to save the Blasphemer, whereas Greg's Musketeers and my Spanish had to get close enough to be adjacent to the party and then pull an event card, which would tell us if we should try to capture or kill the Blasphemer.
First turn, I got to go first, we see Catalina move right up to the Burger (Blasphemer).
At this point I am to 'kill the Burger' as my mission is drawn.
The solid white lines denote walls that block line of sight and movement, so do the squares marked 'X'; the 'doors' as in other scenarios open/close to permit entry behind the walls.
First turn ends. You can also track the different teams by the colored bases, a feature we had not used before. Greg is using red, Roger white, and my group is in blue.
Turn 3 or so, a huge scrap in the middle of the board. I had sent Catalina to 'talk sense' to the Burger. Reason failed so she resorted to her halberd. The burgher left the scene with a splitting headache. The character called 'El Baratero' evidently whiffed in melee with Greg's little flower girl. We all agreed he must have been giving her a chance to withdraw.
In the center Porthos and the Order's sniper traded shots and small damage to each other, D'Artagnan attacks a guard of the late Blasphemer trying to get to the flower girl's side.
A Spaniard and the Broken Cross leader trade shots with light wounds inflicted.
The center turns deadly
as El Baratero takes out the flower girl, D'Artagnan beats back Catalina, "Iron Hans' (with shield) advances to be in position to take on the winner of the melees in the center. On the bottom right, my Capitan moves in to help against Siegfried.
And there I failed to take the last photo.
So what happened? El Baratero threw two knives , wounding D'Artagnan just before Catalina barreled over the Musketeer with her halberd. The gallant hero went down. On the bottom right, the combination of the Hidalgo and El Capitan was too much for Siegfried, who was killed.
Thus, we kept true to the 'new toys' do poorly rule as many of Roger's fellows found out how brutal the hack and slash of the game is when it's billed as swash & buckle. Not counting the burgher and the guards, all but one of his followers had wounds, and his leader got dragged off.
AD1666 has definitely kept our interest up for two years now. I still have monsters & demons, local gangsters and monster hunters to paint and field. Hopefully all the wave 1 items at least get painted for when wave 2 arrives, which is ostensibly in late May.
The next couple of outings will be Silver Bayonet adventures, I really must finish painting my band of Brits.
Comments
I did plunk for the whole first kickstarter, and I am eagerly awaiting the 2nd wave kickstarter. Since I still have thirty or so figures to paint, we still have several scenarios to revisit.
So far painted are the Polish, French, Cossack, Ottoman and Spanish factions. The 'local mafia' the Monster Hunters, the Blood Moon factions are to be painted, my Order of the Broken Cross are 60% done and the demons and the Walton with construct also need paint applied.
Depending on the scenario, as little as an hour and up to four hours playtime. Very scalable now and more scenarios and troops coming in the 2nd wave that should prove fun.
