Mission creep, Blood Red Skies

One of my favorite parts of blogging is the camaraderie shown to one another in the comments. I often read that there are a variety of projects being pursued locally at any given point.  One  type of log I don't show is a painted to date or lead remaining schema.

Often because I am not keeping track. My painted items are primarily the 28mm Napoleonic armies, with WW2 a close second as a time sink.  But the side projects are cumulative in effort and expenditure.  Take for instance the foray into Blood Red Skies  this past 12 months.

This is Airforce General, , the repository of the US, Russian, and Italian forces.  The photo boxes are a size able to store a six plane fighter squadron or a three light bomber unit each. There is also a lonely unit of Zeros,  from the Midway box.

The heavy bombers of the USAAF  are stored separately as they need more room than the fighters.   Two of the smaller containers have play aids but the other fourteen have 1/200th scale fighters.

I intend to fill in the two boxes with more aircraft.  Eventually.

It did all start innocently enough,  a singles set of one unit allied, one axis. Greg H, local long time opponent, soon amassed a collection of IJN assets .  Roger an has an increasing number of Luftwaffe units, and Barry comes down with both Battle of Britain RAF and Luftwaffe.

And there's the basis for the mission creep. The Cactus Airforce to oppose the IJN, enough units to put on heat in the African Campaign,  some heavy bombers to bring the European and Pacific missions to life.  So my P38's were joined by P40's and P47's,  B26 and B17's were added to the B24's.  Devastators  and Avengers joined Wildcats and Hellcats.

Even the mighty P39 has swelled the ranks. As a P400's squadron.

A small excursion in the Eastern Front had squadrons of Yak1,  Mig3, PE2'S added. SB2 units may be added.

And to oppose the Desert Airforce units, recent arrivals of the Regia Aeronautica include SM79 and MA202 squadrons.

Your journey does not include any RAF or Luftwaffe planes. Well maybe I need another case of photo boxes.  After all, I have met some other players at the local game store who are playing.  Mosquitoes anyone?

Have  any of you succumbed to an 'ooh, shiny' moment lately?

Mission Creep is a malady from which many of us suffer. Me included. I have not been struck by the “Oh Shiny” phenomenon lately since I am being diligent on restricting figure purchases in 2024. Making good progress too! Of course, my Lead Pile is already Big and Shiny!

Nothing too severe lately, but I'm always a sucker for more Battletech mechs. With a big new wave of models about to be released, I'm sure to have a major "ooh shiny" problem in the near future. My last impulse buy was a guitar and I think $20-30 worth of mechs barely moves the needle comparatively speaking!

Project creep is quite normal for us all, and I think ultimately quite satisfying. I purchased a 15mm Ghaznavid army a few weeks ago on a whim in spite of declaring there would be no more this year.
'Shiny, shiny,
Shiny boots of leather,
Whiplash girl-child
In the dark...'

Mission creep can come in many forms to beguile the unwary and easily influenced. Like me. I have made it my mission to resist the 'ooh, shiny' moments, but, when boxes of Samurai warriors come at you at 5 bucks the time, what would you?

I'm finding myself being drawn by concepts for war games - projects that several years ago would not have crossed my mind, or perhaps had decades ago and been abandoned, or at least shelved indefinitely. Resisting temptation is not my long suit.

... but being ready to make my own shiny things (for a given level of lustre or sheen) I can often cut out the waiting time to start! Hence my home-built navies.
Cheers,
Ion

That sure is a significant bit of scope creep there, Joe! I am pretty disciplined when it comes to that sort of thing, albeit it I cannot claim much credit, as it is primarily financially driven!

I'm usually quite restrained and good at sticking to a plan but being delayed by 26 hours, having worked ten days straight, back in the hotel I did recently succumb to a Victrix Celtic army!

A whole year with no purchases. I don't see that happening here. I have cut way back.

Always nice to see an expansion on people’s collections. Earlier today I said to my buddy Mike, “Who doesn’t want to spend more money on miniatures?”.
I’ll be adding that last battalion of Austrians this week. My wife really splurged on me a week ago at an awesome pop culture store in Worcester Mass called That’s Entertainment, so I feel a little bit guilty buying more minis, but I’ll get over that guilt with a day. 😃

The real problem is the thrill of a soon to be started project. Siren calls of era's flirted with for decades....
