Our dog would have to wait!

Just about to put the dog out for the evening duties, I looked up and thought better of it as we had an unexpected visitor .

Black Bear

The rubbish containers are just about 5 foot tall. The bear is at least three years old and very healthy looking.

Have not seen him in the yard before,  mostly mothers with cubs. He was very quiet, moved off quickly.  Our dog went out later for a very short trip.

We will resume regular service later. Presuming he stays away.

A few times a year, different individuals mostly, this fellow particularly big. I am glad the dog, and we , were inside when he sauntered by.

Neil, for what it's worth, we have a woodchuck tearing up the lawn as well. Time to start putting the garbage cans in the garage.

LOL - that is one problem I have never had to worry about - in the UK where I spent my first 25 years, there are no dangerous wild animals because we (humans) wiped them all out hundreds of years ago, and in New Zealand, where I have been for around 38 years - there SHOULD be no animals at all - before people arrived, it was birds and reptiles only!

yep, all God's critters around here.

When my family moved back to Connecticut, in 1964, there were no bears, bobcats, coyotes nor wolves. Yes, our forefathers had hunted them to extinction and you could travel the woods unmolested. The mentioned species have all made a comeback , along with deer and turkeys and eagles. Where I live has had people in a village setting for 385 years. Personally I think it a mistake to let the number of bears get as high as it has become in some rather settled areas. Sooner or later somebody is going to be killed by a rambunctious young male bear or an overprotective mother bear fighting for her cubs safety.

Bear sightings are common here in Litchfield county as well. We have yet to have one in our back yard (which is fenced in, not that that woukld stop a bear who really wanted to come in. I fear we will have to have some bear hunting season before too long, as much as I dislike the idea. It is not a good thing for bears to become to comfortable around people!

It’s great to see nature’s comeback. We have had bears in my neighborhood on and off for years, and I’m right off of 91S. We also have a pack of coyotes, foxes and birds of prey.
Next time that bear comes through, run out there and shake your fist at him. He will get the message! 😃

Holy cow! Dang that would've been dangerous to be outside. He does look fairly well-fed though.

There are fewer children in the neighborhood than in years past. Just saying...
