No good deed goes unpunished. (Just what I need, another project ) 19TH CENTURY WESTERN

Despite the recent deluge of new rules our local group has inflicted upon itself....I found another period to work up. Yep, pardner,  Cowboys....maybe some Injuns.....and Mexicans...and buffalo,  you gotta have buffalo. May be a train....whoa, this could get outa' hand,Miss Kitty!

Let me explain.  Whilst digging through the pile of 'somedays' ....projects considered, then shelved, I found the rulebook and maps for the TSR game Boot Hill. The rules published in 1979, simple and  leaning on the game master for most interactions not related to combat.  The box and cardboard characters were long ago lost.

Anyway,  I had been told of an rpg group playing Deadlands  at the local gamestore.  I asked if they might like the maps as a resource.  Some rpg groups work solely as theater of the mind,  but this group's 'DM' thought that the maps could be useful.  Now I had a problem... in that I didn't want to be without them myself.

What I was pleased to find out was how good a copy of the 24 by 30 inch maps could be had from a local office supply store.  Copy shared, original still safely tucked away.  Now maybe someday this old prospector

Not quite the Flyin' Dutchman!

will get to a meeting with the good people in the rpg group.

That would be the end of it, but looking at the maps, and knowing what other hobby resources are in my never throw anything away pile, I plan on doing a very solo campaign setting.

A real oldie but goodie!

Chock full of these, and random tables to bring detail.

Close up of small hexes. How big is your spread, neighbor?

Some cowboys, Indians, buffalo, and US Cavalry are in the unpainted pile. I need some Mexicans, a stage coach, Longhorns, bushwackers, some good, local people...and of course, the Marshall and Miss Kitty.

Looks like fun. It has been more than decade since my Old West collection has been out on the table. Having a copy of TSR's Boot Hill is a bit of a treasure, I think.

So I simply have to delve deeper into your archives? The 'Boot Hill' rules are to my liking, the least liked are the combat/shooting rules. I would probably look at a mash-up with 'Deadlands.'Like I am always saying, more to come.

One of our group members has been trying to get a collection together for Dead Man's Hand for several years, but has not yet managed to get enough together for a game yet. It will be fun watching this project come together.

Western gunfight games are always great fun, Joe. I think if you look here, I have that same prospector figure painted up - it came with an Old Glory Army Card deal about fifteen years ago, I think? If you look at other posts in Jan/Feb 2020, there are a few images of my "gunfighters" :)

You do seem short of eras/themes to wargame...
It's wonderful to 'find' something that we've had for ages and forgotten about or never got around to doing/trying. Everything has its day, yeah?
Those maps are lovely. Go get 'em cowboy!

Keith, yes, they are one and the same. From the OG range of the year for the OG Army. I have them and some Pulp Figures to do, but no pretty ladies as in that post of yours!

Lawrence maybe a few AAR's will put you over the top. "Dead Man's Hand" is certainly a good set of rules!
