If at first you don't succeed

My Carlist War collection has always been sort of a step child, too large to ignore, too small (and one sided ) to game unless special care in planning was taken.

"Base force of 3 units each of 18 castings"  There is also a battery, a cavalry unit, some mounted officers and priests as well as another 18 foot .

What to do, what to do, what to do? I simply do not want to raise the Isabellino forces to oppose the Carlists.  No one around is very keen to play the period.

I do have the imaginations enclave of psuedo Basque types between two players. If I utilize the figures as forces for Rebels and Patriot scenarios, I can turn the listed units into more like 8 units of foot, horse and artillery.  Okay, that is enough for a decent solo or co op game.

I am leaving a good number singly based, for Silver Bayonet games where the irregular troops can be used as brigands, armed villagers, etc.

A day to unbase ( not a word ) from the rectangular stands, another to use one and two inch diameter circular bases. Quick coat of brown art store pigment ....another fine W.I.P. project.

The W.I.P. rebased core force, priests and some of the less regularly uniformed Carlist infantry.  They are all basking on the new stand conceit.

The rework will also allow me to tie in the disparate basing I had previously inflicted on the units.

Something to do on a cold winters day (it was -2 F yesterday ). When they have the basing completed, I will show them off.

Too bad to read about your possibly orphaned Carlist army. Perhaps you should simply bite the bullet and concentrate on fielding an opposing army? Perhaps sending figures out to be painted for hire is a solution?
Perhaps you could consider sending out an "all hands on deck" plea and ask friends to paint a unit each in a good old barn raising exercise? 18 figures per unit? I would take up that offer.

Shame you're not gonna get the other side painted up.

I know what you mean Joe, as I have an orphan 28mm Turkish Renaissance army and little to no interest among my gaming groups to field an opponent. Good luck with the rebasing.

One of my friends definitely sucked a bunch of us into painting figs for his era/ruleset/scale by making an "easy to paint" pitch and getting to command your own forces at a convention. "guarantee you a spot!" he says.

Repurposing the troops for use in a skirmish level game seems like a very good solution to me, Joe.
Jon's suggestion would have worked well too, but seems like you have already started down the chosen path!

At least two years of painting queue would be ahead of them.

Turks! One of my favorite Ren forces. Again, another 5 year project in the queue. The 'good stuff' is what remains....household cavalry and the Janissaries.

Your friend is quite the salesman!

Jonathan, thank you for your ideas. For various reasons I went the skirmish route instead. Honestly getting the other side is the most likely avenue but I don't need another project right now.

Keith, I was looking for a "cheap and cheerful " solution which would allow the use of the troops this year. That motivation to me to paint the remaining 30 or so Carlist figures finishes one side. The Isabellino faction must wait alongside a lot of other possibilities! I have been tempted just today with an oooh shiny project.
Remember when I said no new projects?

Let's talk about it before committing to anything. It is more about time than money.
